In 1997, Guillermo Leiva started a chapter of AIESEC at the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. With the help of Dr. Colette Frayne and Dr. Michael Geringer, international business professors, at Cal Poly, AIESEC became a chartered club on campus. The first year began with only a few members and very little exchange. However, the next year the new President, Alicia Stammer, greatly increased the exchange numbers and Cal Poly sent ten of its students on internships abroad. In 2000, AIESEC San Luis Obispo was one of the top outgoing exchange local chapters in the nation, sending more than ten students on exchanges. The following years AIESEC San Luis Obispo greatly increased their membership and recognition within the College of Business. In 2002, San Luis Obispo landed its first corporate account with The Ocean Breeze Inn located in Pismo Beach. In October of 2002, Ales Vancura, from the Czech Republic, arrived in San Luis Obispo to start his one and half year hotel management internship. AIESEC San Luis Obispo continues to grow at Cal Poly by increasing its visibility and recognition throughout campus. AIESEC San Luis Obispo exists to impact individuals in a positive-way. It is an organization that teaches its members how to respect and care for others from different cultures. It works to show each member how they can reach their full potential. It prepares them for future careers because AIESEC ’s activities require critical thinking and analysis. AIESEC’s activities also teaches its’ members how to work in a team, but more importantly how to lead one. Aiesec provides its’ members with many leadership opportunities at the local and national level. AIESEC members develop strong relationships with people from all over the world that last throughout their lives. Through its’ exchange program Aiesec creates open-minded individuals who strive to increase cultural understanding and cooperation. AIESEC San Luis Obispo will continue to develop students into global leaders, to help mankind reach it’s full potential and to create a more peaceful world for all nations. AIESEC's story is a fascinating one full of discovery and tells of the amazing journey of an organization of young people who have, and continue to change the world. In the past 50 years we have seen such great changes from the days when television was just beginning to the present where an information super-highway networks the globe. Allow us to present the history of more than 800,000 AIESEC members that have rocked our world.
